Concentrating as we must on the verbal eructations of politicians, let us not lose sight of the truth demonstrated at last night’s Superbowl. George W. Bush and Dick Cheney are not America. Prince is America.
But Billy Joel sings the national anthem.
After Janet Jackson and the infamous ‘wardrobe malfuction,’ I was very surprised to see Prince on the lineup… this seemed like an ingeniously diaphanous allusion to his entire career to date, carefully aimed at avoiding similar blowback (as it were).
Awesome. That just made my day. “Prince is America”. I couldn’t agree more.
Long live Jimi!
There has been a bit of a storm of comment in the US over the fact that there has not been a storm of comment over the fact that Prince’s performance included a suggestively priapic shadowplay sequence, considering the sensitivities of CBS after Janet’s “wardrobe malfunction”. I suppose the difference is, hers was real(ish?). Someone suggested, in the now well-worn tradition, Britney’s cervix could make an appearance next year, but she would have to learn to play an instrument.
The synthetic MSNBC commentary can be seen over at good old onegoodmove.
Michael Musto: “Prince went genital into that good night” – genius!
His voice was exactly as always, including the falsetto, but his face looked a bit rough. Maybe it was just the slicked-up pompadour that gave that effect.
Chris Hedges is also America, though admittedly he has a smaller audience: http://1820.org.uk/2007/02/he_....._war.shtml

I reckon Prince looks pretty hot for a 48 year old. We should be so lucky!
