MOTOBLUR

Tech feature naming fail

In technology news, Motorola has announced that, at some time in the future, it will allow you to buy a new portable telephone that it will have made? I know, I know, exciting enough already, but wait, there’s more: it’s called “the Motorola CLIQ with MOTOBLUR”.

MOTOBLUR? A motorized system for taking out-of-focus pictures? That will take the guesswork out of it, I suppose.

Motorola made a phone called the RAZR, pronounced like ‘razor’ and meant to imply that the phone was razor-thin. Perhaps BLUR is meant to be read as ‘bluer’ or even ‘blurt’. A sad phone? A phone for people who can’t stop themselves from making sudden statements? Other possible meanings?

In fact, MOTOBLUR is apparently a system for synchronising various kinds of information from “social media” and email accounts and displaying it all in one (probably bewildering) lump on the screen of the phone.

    There you go.
